Landing Zone Requirements
- At least 100x100 feet and relatively flat (less than 6%).
- Clear of debris, people, animals, etc (avoid loose dirt, dust, snow, etc. if possible).
LZ Commander
- Oversees the operation.
- Makes assignments.
- Reports the wind speed to the pilot (i.e., calm, low, moderate, high; direction; steady or gusty).
- Reports obstructions to the pilot (e.g., trees, towers, wires, etc). There are wires running north-south across the parking lot that is east of Brighton's' LZ-2. There is a steeple that is north of LZ-2.
Landing Person (I have no idea what you call this person!)
- Kneel where you want the nose of the helicopter.
- Put your back to the wind (helicopters land into the wind).
- Extend both arms straight in front of you (pointing to where the helicopter should land).
- Do not move as the helicopter lands (they use you as the ground reference).
- Optionally deploy smoke so the pilot sees the wind (you can hold or stand on the smoke canister).
Guards
- Ensure that there aren't any loose objects near the LZ.
- Prevent people from getting near the helicopter.
- Keep your back toward the helicopter so you can see people who might be approaching.
