Patrolling Tips
× This website contains unofficial information to help us do a better job. Refer to the Brighton employee manual or your supervisor for official information.
The following tips have been mentioned at morning meetings, refreshers, or in some other context.
-
Patient care:
- On cold days, get out the door quickly and get pts inside quickly.
-
ALS Calls:
- Document signage on the patroller comments supplement.
- Notify the senior paid patroller when ALS has been requested (so s/he can notify management and the parking crew).
- Notify UPD of patients with life-threatening injuries (i.e., many ALS calls) and serious injuries to minors.
- ALS calls on Milly should usually go to the Chalet rather than the Aid Room.
- Manage the scene.
-
Rope lines:
- Ropes should be connected to signposts and bamboo using clove hitches.
- Ropes should be connected to signposts above the signs.
- Orange flagging should be threaded through all ropes (without a knot).
- Ropes should not be attached to fixed objects (e.g., trees).
-
Separated parties:
- We prefer to refer to these as "separated" rather than "lost."
- Increase the urgency if the separated party is young (and especially if it is extremely cold outside or it is early season and we have open creeks).
- Keep a patroller with the reporting party if possible. Otherwise, get the reporting party's phone number and request that they call Crest Top if the person is located.
-
Speed control:
- Remain calm. Don't let a disrespectful guest lure you into similar behavior.
- If the infraction was moderate, educate the guest and let them keep their pass.
- If the infraction was moderate but the guest refuses to learn from their behavior, take their pass (Max will keep it for a day or two).
- If the guest was skiing recklessly, take the guest's pass (Max will determine when and whether they should get the pass).
-
Toboggans:
- Put toboggan carriers on chair backs with the chains (not the curved bars) toward the guest.
- Rotate toboggans out of the aid room promptly.
- Transport toboggans back to their top shack promptly.
-
Other:
- Do not leave a top shack uncovered except for 10-50s (i.e., not for transport-only calls).
- A patroller's job includes preventing injuries by removing hazards when identified and practical (i.e., removing or flagging a patch of snowcat debris).
