-
Using the radio:
- Decide what you are going to say before you key your mic. (This is important not only for the initial transmission but also when replying.)
- Wait a moment before keying your mic to make sure you won't interrupt an existing conversation.
- Press the transmit button, wait a full second, and then begin speaking.
-
Things to announce over the radio:
- All 10-50s (even if they are phoned in to dispatch).
- Walk-ins (so all patrollers are situationally aware).
-
Examples of things to avoid announcing over the radio:
- "I am two minutes out from the Aid Room."
- Long conversations that would be better handled via a phone call
- During a complex mission, a rope rescue, a helicopter landing, etc., it is reasonable to say, "A ____ is in progress. Please limit radio traffic." In some cases, it might be appropriate to change to a different frequency.
-
To change the frequency on the little radios:
- Press and hold the button that displays a small blue key until ______. [Help me out here, folks.]
- Use the up/down buttons to select the new frequency.
- Then what?? [Help me out here, folks.]
